MaryAnn Sings: “Dream Medley” Open Mic Performance

“I have a dream, a song to sing…”

From as far back as I can remember, I have always been a dreamer. As a child I loved to draw, because it was my way of expressing my imagination, and these dreams inside.

The longing for adventure (like climbing Enid Blyton’s Faraway Tree)…

The longing for romance (my first crush was Robin from some Batman cartoon in the 1980’s)…

The longing to become the best version of myself (this was like a feeling I always had, that I’m “more” than what I seem to be)…

When I was told at 8 years old that I shouldn’t be an artist because artists don’t make money, I completely stopped drawing and forgot about this dream.

Then I started writing short stories when I was 11 (usually featuring my close friends from school and our adventures)…

Which turned into longer stories in my early teens (usually featuring David Duchovny as some hero character and me as some sort of damsel in distress)…

And when I was 16 I became inspired by contemporary Christian pop (this is a long story for another time), and dreamed of becoming a singer-songwriter in Nashville, Tennessee, some day…

Then I actually went there and majored in Songwriting, got intimidated by all the other way more awesome singers in my college, changed my mind about my singer dream, then changed my mind about the songwriter dream, then felt very lost for a few months…

Then in my final semester, I enrolled in “Intro to Drawing”, and while working on a very intense drawing project, I had a flashback about my artist dream, and wondered: “What if I was meant to be an artist all along?”…

(And then a lot more stuff happened here, including some romantic drama…)

Then in 2013 I held my first solo art exhibition in Singapore, and I’ve been a professional artist since.

To be honest, I never thought I would return to singing again, at least not in the public arena.

I thought that living my artist dream was enough, and I would be content with singing as part of music ministries in church (until I no longer practiced my religion), or just be a bathroom singer…

But that singer dream continued to live as a longing inside me, a longing to be expressed, a longing to be heard – a voice waiting to be set free.

I decided it was time to take the stage again.

And share my story with you.

Because you have a dream too…

And it’s waiting for you to live it.
